Public Relations Society of America's Diversity Tool Kit

Through this Public Relations Society of America's Diversity Tool Kit, PRSA’s National Diversity Committee provides members with diversity-related research, materials, applicable tools, professional development opportunities and linkages with key organizations. Its creation rests on two objectives: To educate members by providing them the resources needed to help manage their own Chapters/Districts/Sections diversity initiatives and to influence the composition of their professional development and membership so that the diversity of its membership reflects and embraces the diversity of the profession.

Understanding your Target Audiences

At the national level, diversity is one of PRSA's main organizational initiatives. PRSA's Diversity Committee advances the objectives of and develops an inclusive Society by reaching and involving members who represent a broad spectrum of ethnic, racial and sexual-orientation groups, and by providing professional development, knowledge and support to professionals of diverse race, gender, sexual orientation or ethnicity to help them succeed in public relations.

In 2006, the Fort Worth PRSA Chapter will focus on diversity, under the banner of "Diversity: Understanding Your Target Audience." Throughout the year, we will be reinforcing that the once formal global boundaries of the marketplace are evaporating, making diversity an even more important topic for businesses and organizations in Fort Worth and around the world. The issues surrounding diversity mandate that the subject be addressed from the workplace to the marketplace. Workforce diversity is fundamental to business success, and today's diverse marketplace requires that public relations professionals and the businesses and organizations they represent truly understand their target audiences.

Information about various diversity subjects will be available at monthly chapter meetings. Diversity Chair Tom Burke and Diversity Committee members Dora Tovar and Glenda Thompson are helping to develop plans for a diversity presentation at one of this year's luncheon meetings, and perhaps even a diversity-themed professional development session.

Diversity shouldn't be just a buzzword. It should be a way of life. The better we understand our audiences, the better we will be able to meet their needs, whether they are clients, employees or prospects.
